ECO is located in Oberaula, Germany and provides integrated organisational, managerial and technical services for the sustainable management of natural resources in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate areas. ECO's aim is to combine the potential of human and natural resources for ecologically and economically sustainable development. Our work is process oriented and based on partnership, participation, institutional pluralism and subsidarity.

Since 1992 ECO has provided services to organisations and people in more than sixty countries in Africa, America and Asia, as well as in Europe. The professional staff of ECO are foresters, geographers, economists, sociologists, agronomists, ecologists, communicators and administrators. Natural resources are covered by a number of fields, and call for the integration of ecological, socio-cultural and economic functions and potentials. Communication is a key linking factor.

Household energy and natural resource management are key areas of intervention of ECO. The experience in this field comprises (i) policy and strategy development (ii) project identification and project appraisal (iii) monitoring and evaluation (iv) technical, economic and sociological studies (v) applied research work (vi) training and workshops. Our main area of cooperation are the ACP countries and the major commissioning bodies are: GTZ, World Bank, EC and ILO.

In 1999 ECO and local partner AGRITCHAD have been commissioned to implement the World Bank supported "Household Energy Project" (Credit No. 3082-CD). The major objective is to (i) restructure the fuelwood sector around N"Djamena so that the supply of fuelwood is managed rationally and the environment is protected; and (ii) to encourage conservation of fuelwood by promoting the use of improved stoves and substitute fuels and by establishing economic pricing of fuelwood and introducing an adequate tax system.
