University of Liverpool, Department of Public Health

Member

Public health in Liverpool has a long and influential history, including the appointment of the country"s first medical officer of health, Dr William Henry Duncan, in 1847. Dr Duncan was followed by a number of eminent medical officers of health who, reflecting their strong links with the University, were also professors. A new University-funded Chair was established in September 1979. Since then, the Department has grown steadily, covering a wide range of disciplines.

The department aims to contribute to improving and maintaining the health of people locally, nationally and internationally, through:

  • excellence in education and pure and applied research;
  • development of a learning environment that encourages staff to fulfil their potential;
  • the formation of constructive links with the local and wider community and contributing to and supporting local and regional developments.

The Department has a broad range of research activities, and, whilst building these, remains open to new and related developments. The Department has two main research groups:

  • Inequalities and healthy communities, and
  • Outcome surveillance for health improvement

The Department aims to improve existing collaborative links, locally within the University, nationally with other United Kingdom institutions, and internationally with universities and agencies including WHO and the European Union. Existing collaboration includes research projects on child health, nutrition, health promotion and indoor air pollution, as well as programmes within Europe on cancer, public health training and postgraduate education.
