The Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) is a research and training centre at the University of Surrey UK. CES is now firmly established, in the UK and internationally, as a focus for cross-disciplinary analysis of long-term environmental problems. Represented by a variety of engineering, social science and science disciplines, the Centre aims to maintain an atmosphere of open intellectual enquiry through collaboration and debate between individual members who bring their own disciplinary strengths but respect the different approaches and interests of others. In this way, we aim to examine and enlighten those parts of the environmental agenda which single-discipline research cannot reach. CES dates from the year of the UNCED Conference in Rio; our rapid growth has shown the importance of the transdisciplinary approach in the post-Rio years.
