| Description |
The author argues that the nature and the efficiency of energy services available in a community is a good measure of the level of poverty. The fulfilment of basic human needs -food, shelter, health care, education and livelihoods- requires application of energy inputs but the poor often have not enough energy input available. Besides that, poor people use energy inefficiently, mainly because of the technologies of energy consumption they are using are of a low quality. Women play a crucial role in meeting household and community energy needs and female-headed households are mostly the poorest. Hence, the author says that there is a need to develop energy-utilising technologies that will alter the quality of life of women. |
