Member

SIRDC was established by the government of Zimbabwe under the provisions of the Research Act of 1986 (Zimbabwe) to spearhead technology transfer in Zimbabwe. There are a total of seven institutes of which Energy Technology is one and a Technology management division.

All the Researchers at SIRDC have a minimum of MSc Degree and the technicians have a minimum of a Higher National diploma. In the Energy Technology Institute there are currently 5 full time research scientists under the directorship of Prof. Elmissiry - a reknowned academic in Zimbabwe. In addition there are three staff currently receiving training in the UK and will be completing their studies at the end of this year. They are doing PhD studies in renewable energy. We also have on a contract basis a Japanese expert in energy conservation in the Institute. Staff include:

  1. Professor M M Elmissiry, Institute Director
  2. Mr. G. B. Makokoro, Senior Research Scientist
  3. Mrs. E. Bore, Research Engineer
  4. Mr. O. Manyewe, Research Engineer
  5. Mr. M. Mujuru, Research Scientist
Recently some of the Institute staff underwent training in Renewable Energy in Morocco funded by UNESCO under the Global Renewable and Educational Training programme. ETI hosted the first UNESCO Summer School for English Speaking countries in Renewable Energy in 1998 and will run the second UNESCO Summer School in Solar Energy in October 2000. SIRDC will host the "UNESCO Solar Platform" that will provide for practical training in renewable energy in Southern Africa. JICA, the Japanese aid agency donated equipment for the testing of solar equipment and DANIDA will be supporting a project on making standards for Solar Water Heaters. Currently we are working with the GTZ with the aim of establishing a Biomass Stove Test Laboratory.
