SPARKNET organisation profileTanzania Traditional Energy Development and Environment Organisation (TaTEDO)Member![]() TaTEDO is a coalition of individuals, professionals, artisans, farmers, community based organisations (CBOs) and micro enterprises involved in the development and promotion of Renewable Energy Systems (RES) for enhancing sustainable environment and socio-economic development of communities. The organisation was registered in 1990 as a national non-governmental, non-profit energy and environment organisation.
The mission of TaTEDO is to develop and promote rationale use of renewable energy technologies through provision of relevant information; knowledge and skills geared towards communities" socio-economic development and environmentally sound practices.
In order to achieve its mission and goals, TaTEDO undertakes the following activities:
Section activities include environmental initiatives (tree nursery establishment training, tree growing, environmental conservation, schools environmental training, biogas promotion and advisory services and improved traditional charcoal production technologies), bioenergy (improved Wood, charcoal and fireless stoves, Small scale charcoal ovens for baking), and non-biomass renewable energy (solar energy, wind energy and documentation and information networking)
Renewable energy and Wood fuel Technologies and practices being promoted by TaTEDO were recognised as among the hundred global best practices during the UN Habitant II Conference held in Istanbul, Turkey from May 30th to June 14th, 1996. Upon request from UNHC, the best practice information was updated in March 1998. In 1999 TaTEDO was presented by UNDP a certificate of best practices award in recognition of the valuable contribution to the promotion of indigenous technologies in combating the desertification and mitigating the effects of drought.
TaTEDO is presently hosting the National Appropriate Technologies Information Services (NATIS) Network and the National Gender and Sustainable Energy Network.
