SPARKNET organisation profileDepartment of Food Science and Technology, Makerere UniversityAssociate
The Department of Food Science and Technology is a University department that deals with training, research and outreach activities with different organisations. In July 2001, the Department of Food Science and Technology collaborated with the East African Energy Technology Development Network-Uganda in July 2001 and carried out training for participants from Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar, in construction and use of the different types as appropriate methods of post-harvest technologies. The solar driers included the hybrid tunnel drier that was being used in Kayunga, a rural area in Mukono district, Uganda. The participants were also shown the variety of solar driers as a way of providing choices for technologies. Through such training, the East African Energy Technology Network-Uganda formulated a solar drier project that aims at enhancing income earning opportunities for poor female and male farmers in rural areas to obtain food processing technologies that can enable entry into the export market. Both the Department of Food Science and Technology and , the East African Energy Technology Network-Uganda will contribute tot the SPARKNET documentation by showing their experience in planning projects using gender analysis and cost-benefit analysis within technology choice and transfer context.
