The Department of Women and Gender Studies (DWGS), is a multidisciplinary academic unit of Makerere University. The mission of the DWGS is to contribute to development in Uganda through ensuring that the gender component is an integral part of the development process. As part of its objective of facilitating the integration of gender in decision-making and policy formation, the Department staff and students participate in practical activities within and outside of the University. The Department organized a workshop in December 2000 in collaboration with the East African Energy Technology Development Network ,whose objectives included (among others) an assessment and guidance in the integration of gender in the National Energy Policy. The contribution to the SPARKNET documentation from the Department will focus on the experiences from collaboration of NGOs, training and research institutions and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, in the planning process for the integration of gender in the Energy Policy.
