| Description |
A range of energy carrier and appliance combinations are, or can be used in rural communities to meet the complement of energy services required by households. This report identifies the priority appliances, their energy sources and the typical services delivered by these appliance energy carrier combinations. The focus is on those services and appliances used in rural areas, and covers: paraffin and gas stoves and refrigerators, wood stoves and fires, coal stoves, electrical appliances and heaters and refrigerators. A range of other items such as solar water heaters, televisions sets, etc are briefly reviewed. For the more critical services (cooking and lighting in particular), costs of appliances and information on maintenance requirements has been gathered. A financial analysis methodology has been developed, which allows one to determine the cost of delivering a range of different services using different appliance/energy carrier combinations. The spreadsheet based model has been designed to be very flexible, and at the same time to act as an appliance database. It allows rapid assessment of the financial implications of different service types, levels and periods of operation. |
