Description A longitudinal study to monitor the impact of electrification in rural areas. The study was conducted in Eskom electrified households and compared technical data on Eskom computer system with interview data gathered during field visits. Field interviews were conducted to explore such aspects as decision-making, energy expenditure, appliance acquisition and use, appliance repair problems, electricity use for income generation and impacts of electricity on quality of life and education. Amongst other things, this study showed that rural households do use electricity for cooking.
