The ITDG proposal for the development of the Stoves Programme for 1986-1989 highlights the need to move to into domestic and community level food preparation and processing to provide income generation for poor rural women. Jill Gordon's publication is a background paper for the development of this Stoves Programme. It describes the different income-generating activities for women involving a heating process (rice parboiling, cassava processing, maize processing, bread baking, beer brewing, fish smoking, oil extraction, street foods, weaning foods, sugar making, fruit and vegetable processing). Workers on ITDG programmes were surprised how often stoves intended for domestic use were used for commercial purposes. But the stoves were not designed for preparing food for sale. Jill Gordon suggests that further development is needed not only to stimulate these income-generating activities but also to provide these women with stoves designed for the purpose of commercial use. Beside that, community-scale stoves need to be developed for use by women's groups, who prime concern is income generating. ITDG is concerned with the dual objective of this project; reducing the level of fuel consumption of rural industries and increasing income levels for poor rural women. |
