The Department, which was established in 1991 is the academic wing of the women's movement in Uganda. It is part of the faculty of Social Sciences and is a multi-disciplinary academic and community oriented unit at the forefront of initiatives to address gender and development issues from an African perspective. The department"s goal is to contribute to development in Uganda through ensuring that the gender component is an integral part of the development process. The Department serves as a regional centre for gender training, research and outreach programmes. Currently the department runs a regional course "Gender Training for Development Practice in Africa".

The Department of Women and Gender Studies, Makerere University is organizing the Womens Worlds 2002, 8th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women, making Uganda the first African country to host the congress. The congress will be held between the 21st - 26th July, 2002 at Makerere University Campus in Kampala, Uganda.

The Department is involved in many research activities. The Swedish Agency for Research Co-operation with Developing Countries (SAREC) has funded Gender Mainstreaming University wide research. Faculty are also individually involved in research.

The Department has a wide range of expertise among its highly qualified and experienced staff offering expertise for research and consultancies in National Planning; Strategic Planning Project Development, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation; Baseline Surveys; Needs Assessment; Community Mobilisation; Advocacy; and Training.

Areas of expertise include: Gender and Development; Gender Mainstreaming; Health; Management; Urbanisation; Economic Policy; Education; Agriculture; Rural Development; Human Rights; Women"s Rights and Gender Issues; Refugees and Internally Displaced People; Armed Conflict and Peace Issues; Law Reform; Civic Society; Micro-Financing.

The DWGS intends to increase its local and international visibility through active production and promotion of publications generated or sponsored by the Department.
